Silencing Shame


You old ghost that won’t go away;
You fester like a bitter cancer in my soul.
You leave the lingering odor of regret
No scrubbing can cleanse,
No fragrance can mask,
No medicine can cure.


You’re something more than a nightmare,
You’re a waking horror in the mind,
A wound in the soul bleeding guilt,
Casting shadows of memories
Like curtains on the wall,
A shroud within a prison
Of perpetual pain.


You must be hidden; exposure only amplifies
the anguish you fuel, like the fire
In an oven where the temperature
Can never change. You are the shadow
Stalking every step,
Tethered to the past,
Weakening the will’s
Hold on hope.


I will cauterize you with the flame of forgiveness.
I will baptize you in the balm of grace.
You will fade until you are forgotten,
And in your place I will find
Unconditional acceptance,
In the face of unfailing


Psalm 34:5
Those who look to him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed.
